On 3/5/2010 Dr. Christine Wiedinmyer from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) gave a presentation to the NWCG Smoke Committee (SmoC) regarding her work estimating fire emissions and the many other fire emission estimation projects going on elsewhere (such as at NASA). She also discussed new emision factor work being conducted by Dr. Robert Yokelson (FS RMRS & University of Montana). Dr. Yokelson is identifying a greater suite of VOCs coming off fires as well as adjusting (in many cases downward) previous emission factor estimates of PM etc. Attached is Christine's presentation (Wiedinmyer_FireEmis_NWCG_SmoC_20100305.pdf).

Then, attached is her recently published paper in Environmental Science & Technology (Wiedinmyer and Hurteau, 2010) quantifying how prescribed burning reduces emissions from fire as compared to wildfires. The press release states: "Drawing on satellite observations and computer models of emissions, the researchers concluded that widespread prescribed burns can reduce fire emissions of carbon dioxide in the West by an average of 18 to 25 percent, and by as much as 60 percent in certain forest systems."

Also attached are three other related papers that may be of interest.

This is a discussion area for topics related to fire/smoke and emission inventories.

On 2/10/2009 EPA posted the Final version of the 2008 National Emission Inventory (NEI) Plan for Event Emissions, which is how fire is to be reported. The 2008 fire NEI will utilize SMARTFIRE and BlueSky.

The Document is available at the following url and is also attached.
