Community Based Fire Management (CBFiM) is, as the name suggests, an approach that encourages the involvement and participation of local communities in the planning and implementation of fire management and other related resource management activities. In very general terms, CBFiM integrates local people and communities in the system of fire management planning and implementation. This collaboration of villagers, government staff and sometimes commercial interests lays the foundation for mutually beneficial resource management objectives. 

The term Community Based Fire Management (CBFiM) was coined by Sameer Karki at the Regional Community Forestry Training Centre (RECOFTC) in Bangkok in 2000. The lower case "i" in the acronym is to distinguish it from CBFM -- Community Based Forest Management -- which has been under discussion, implementation and identification for some time.
 
The target audience for this workspace includes CBFiM practitioners, natural resource managers, conservation professionals and fire management experts. The Global Fire Monitoring Center serves as the primary repository for CBFiM resources. CBFiM is similar to The Nature Conservancy’s Integrated Fire Management framework. 

Subgroups have been created (see box at lower right) to facilitate discussions and/or house resources related to specific CBFiM topics.
